EMDR
Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — an evidence-based therapy for trauma, PTSD, and more.

What is
EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy originally developed for trauma and PTSD. It uses bilateral stimulation — typically eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones — to help the brain process distressing memories that have become stuck and continue to influence how you feel and respond in the present.

When we experience something overwhelming, the brain sometimes stores the memory in a fragmented way — without fully processing the emotions, sensations, and meanings attached to it. EMDR helps the brain complete that processing, so the memory loses its charge and no longer hijacks the present.

What can EMDR
help with?

EMDR is most well-known for treating trauma and PTSD, but research supports its use for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, phobias, grief, depression, shame, and experiences of inadequacy rooted in past events.

EMDR is not a standalone treatment — it is integrated into a broader therapeutic relationship. We build safety and stabilization before processing begins, and the work is always paced to what feels right for you.

EMDR
done virtually

Vea offers virtual EMDR therapy for adults throughout Florida. A common question is whether EMDR can be as effective when conducted online. The research says yes. Multiple studies have found that virtual EMDR produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment, and many clients find that working from their own environment actually supports a greater sense of safety and comfort during processing.

Virtual EMDR uses the same core protocol as in-person sessions. Bilateral stimulation is delivered through eye movements tracked on screen, self-administered tapping, or auditory tones through headphones. The therapeutic relationship — which is central to the effectiveness of EMDR — remains fully intact through a secure video platform.

All EMDR sessions at Vea are conducted virtually via a HIPAA-compliant platform. You'll need a private, quiet space and a reliable internet connection. If you have questions about whether virtual EMDR is right for your situation, we can discuss that during the free consultation.
